Darwin, tour 1 and 2

20 November 2012 | Australië, Alice Springs

The last couple of days I spent my time in Darwin and doing some tours. The first tour took me to kakadu (pronounce as Gagudju) and litchfield national park and the second one took me from Darwin to Alice springs with some interesting spots on the way such as Nitmulik and Karla Karla (the devils marbles).

Though Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory it only has just under 130000 inhabitants. Truth be told it kinda is a boring place that is hot and humid as well. During my stay it was on average 34 degrees Celsius with a humidity of about 90%.
And except for one particular place it is not possible to swim there. Too many crocs and box jellyfish.
Thus we spent a lot of time at the Darwin waterfront, where it is reasonably safe.
We also heard that Darwin is one party town, but we did not experience any of that. One reason is we were not there during the weekend, but on Monday it was just plain empty at the bars.

Luckily the first tour started on Wednesday and we were picked up at 6. We directly started to go to go on a croc tour. We went on a cruise to see the crocs and we did. First of was a freshy (not harmful to humans) but later on we saw some salties (know for eating the occasional tourist). It was not a very big one but already quite deadly in my eyes. During the tour I was proud to see another white bellied sea eagle and a wedge tailed eagle (Australia's biggest eagle).
Next up was Kakadu national park where we saw some aboriginal rock art. It was very nice to see how it developed and some stories behind them.
We also walked on a very nice plateau where I could take some amazing pictures of the view.
The next day was more of a swimming day. We went to a waterfall in Kakadu (Gunlom falls) and swam for an entire day. In that water there were supposedly fresh water crocs but they are of no harm. Unfortunately we did not see any.
The next day we went to litchfield national park where we also swam a lot. I also licked some butts and I found it very tasty, luckily it were the butts of green ants. Apparently the ass of a green ant tastes like lime, and it actually does. Imagine yourself eating those sour tasting candy with a lime taste and that is how those ants taste.
Please do try them when you see one in Australia.
First of in litchfield were the Florence falls and directly after the buley rock hole. It were some amazing places to swim. The water was very nice and cool. But unfortunately no freshies to see in there.
After this we went to wangi falls to swim and to go for a walk. The swimming was not so nice as buley rock hole but still ok and the walk was not bad either. The end of the tour consisted of seeing some termite mounds, two kinds to be specific, the magnetic and the cathedral mounds. The magnetic ones are very thin and align with the magnetic field of the earth and the cathedrals are very high (up to 6 metres).

The second tour was not as nice as the first one as it consisted more of driving. The only real thing worth mentioning are the devils marbles.
It was cool to see how these giant rock formations could exist and came to be. During the first night we also slept in the middle of a vicious thunder storm. The photos we made there were amazing however I made them on somebody else's camera so lets hope he dents them to me.
Right now I am in Alice springs and will go on the next tour tomorrow.

    Hoi Timo,

Foto's van het echte werk: krokodillen, mieren, slangen, een adelaar. Een mooie jump en een hilarisch uitziende Joyce. Je hebt het goed naar je zin zo te zien. Blijft er nog wat over als je straks in het zuiden bent?

    Kus, papa
